History of Khajuraho :
During Chandellas rule Khajuraho became religious capital of Chandellas. The Chandella rulers always believe that politics and religious & cultural activities are two separate things and they should not be mingle. With this intention in mind they made Khajuraho as the religious capital of Chandellas and established Mahoba as their political capital which is about 60km. away from Khajuraho. For entry and exit purpose the whole Khajuraho is surrounded by walls with about 8 gates and each gate is flanked by two date/palm trees. Because of the presence of the date trees Khajuraho get its name as Khajura-vahika. “Khajura” is a Hindi word meaning ‘Date’ and “Vahika” means ‘Bearing’. If we go through the history we will come to know that Khajuraho is also famous with the name of Jejakbhukti.

Khajuraho Temples History:
Madhya Pradesh is famous all over the world as the land of great archeological findings and remains. Madhya Pradesh is said to be the home of various monuments which are representative various periods of history. Buddhist Stupas , Rock paintings and Temples which are among most popular world heritage sites of Central India, Khajuraho is known for its metaphorical and complicated temples that are amazing and brilliant piece of human imagination, artistic creativity, splendid architectural work and deriving spiritual peace through eroticism.

The temples of Khajuraho built by the Chandella ruler between AD 900 and 1130, relates to the medieval period of India and they are the most beautiful monuments we all have ever imagined. The period of Chandella’s rule was said as the golden period of Chandella rulers and is presumed that during that period each and every Chandella ruler has built at least one temple in his lifetime. So it is concluded that all the temples of Khajuraho are not constructed by any single Chandella ruler but building temple was the tradition of Chandella rulers and is followed by almost all rulers of Chandella dynasty.

It was revealed from the facts and figures that the first temple of Khajuraho was built byAbu Rihan al Biruni in AD 1022 and the Arab traveler Ibn Battuta in AD 1335. The archeological facts and figures revealed that out of 85 temples of Khajuraho only 25 temples are surviving after going through various stages of preservation and care and all these temples are scattered over an area of about 9 square miles.

The group of monuments of Khajuraho is India’s gift to the world, and these monuments stand for a sonnet to life engraved on stone of temples. The monuments are so beautifully built that it seems that the life of those times has been captured on stone giving evidences and brilliant visualization and sculpted obsession of Chandela dynasty. These incredible temples have exceptional mythology linked with them. These 85 temples which are as a result of the motivation of dreams of Chandela King, Chandravarman stood out as eternal expressions of love and celebrated specimens of artistic and architectural brilliance. This exciting dream visualization of Chandravarman took hundred years from 950-1050 AD to take shape on stone temples at Khajuraho. Over the peiod of time only 25 out of 85 temples continue to exist even after the havoc of difficult times and gave the future generations an opportunity to wonder the artistic inheritance of ancestors. Tourists who visit this temple experience the flood of emotions while marveling these temples. Often they feel surprised, amazed or wowed to see such a sensuous and expressive interpretation of human relationships in India. Such is the greatness of Khajuraho’s wealth.

As soon as the Chandella dynasty fall (after AD 1150), the temples of Khajuraho suffered major demolition & deformity by Muslim invaders who started forcing local people to leave Khajuraho. As Muslim invaders are narrow-minded and have no place in their mind for worship places of other religions so all the citizens of Khajuraho left the town with a hope that their solitude will not attract attention of Muslim invaders into the temple area and in this way both temple and they themselves will remain unhurt. So it was from about 13th century to 18th century, that the temples of Khajuraho remain in forest cover, away from popularity till it was re-discovered by British engineer T. S. Burt.

Best Time to Visit Khajuraho : Khajuraho which is a small village in central India gives beautiful projections of the Vindhyan range. Though Khajuraho can be visited throughout the year but the best time to visit khajuraho is during the months of October to March when the average temperature is between 90° and 40° Fahrenheit.
