Kolkata well known as the ‘City of Joy’ holds an important place in the economy, politics and culture of India. Kolkata the capital city of West Bengal, is among one of the four metropolitan cities in India and has retained its prototypical charm despite modernization.

Just because Kolkata has produced so many greatest thinkers, artists, film makers and writers like Rabindranth Tagore, Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay and Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay and Satyajit Ray a famous and popular line is linked with the city as ‘What Bengal thought today, India thought tomorrow’. Undoubtedly, the ideas of Kolkata in the fields of literature, art, cinema and theater have given motivation and inspiration to rest of the country.

The city was founded in 1698 and was earlier known as Calcutta. During the British rule the city was served as the capital of British India till 1911 and then was shifted to Delhi. In 2001 the city was renamed as Kolkata. Kolkata is located along the banks of river Hoogly, and is connected to Howrah by the iconic Howrah Bridge.

The architecture of the city in the form of Raj Bhavan, Writers’ Building and the Victoria Memorial Hall are just some of the many buildings that hark back to a long-gone era reflects the city’s colonial past. Kolkata is also home to some of the best educational institutes in the country.

It was only during their years of education in Kolkata that the Ideas of the famous social reformers like Swami Vivekananda and Raja Ram Mohan Roy and Indian freedom fighter Shubhas Chandra Bose formed ideas related to social reform. It was in Kolkata only that the Mother Teresa spent a major part of her life and also lies in everlasting rest in the city at The Mother House.

The city is among the 52 Shakti Peethas in the world. In Kolkata the Bengali’s worship Goddess Kali and the Goddess is deeply honored and Durga Pooja is celebrated in the grandest manner especially at Kalighat’s Kali temple.

Kolkata has produced some finest sportsmen who have represented India like Sourav Ganguly and Leander Paes. It is also home to some of the most popular international sports stadium like Eden Gardens and Salt Lake stadium.
