About Darjeeling[Go Back]

Darjeeling which is one of the most scenic and hugely popular hill resorts in India is approximately 2,134 meters above main sea level; and is 686 km from Kolkata in West Bengal. With the background of the forceful snow-clad Himalayan peaks, Darjeeling has been popular with tourists for its beauty and pleasant climate. On a sunny day one can get a clear view of the world’s third highest peak, Kanchenjunga, from the town. During the monsoons avoid visiting Darjeeling as during monsoon Kanchenjunga is not visible. June, July and August should also be Skipped and December and January should also be avoided.

Being the home to the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR), it’s also a World Heritage Site. Leisurely walks through the town’s old-fashioned streets, watching the careless life of the locals can be very well enjoyed by the tourists.

Overabundance of options is offered by Darjeeling to those looking for an adrenaline rush. To catch a quick look of red panda, rhododendron blooms or for some high altitude trekking visits the Singalila National Park . As the park is largely free of ferocious animals and snakes, the park is said to be a camper’s delight making it the most popular family camping destination in the eastern Himalaya.

Other activities that one can indulge in and enjoy are mountain biking, river rafting, outdoor camping, canoeing and kayaking. If nothing interests you, then just hang up your boots and unwind, soaking in the scenic beauty of the hill town.

Don’t forget to visit the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute and the Happy Valley Tea Garden. On your itinerary shopping at the flea market (Bhutiya market) should be there too.

In several Hindi movies Darjeeling and the DHR have featured. The song Mere Sapnon Ki Rani Kab Ayegi Tu from the film Aradhana featuring Sharmila Tagore-Rajesh Khanna song continues to be high on popularity even today. Saif Ali Khan-starrer Parineeta and Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Raju Bangaya Gentleman are some of the movies shot in Darjeeling.

in 1925 Mahatma Gandhi visited Darjeeling. 80 km of journey from Siliguri to Darjeeling was completed by the Mahatma on foot. So enchanted was the Mahatma that he declared the best way to travel through such a beautiful land was on foot.
